Promethazine medication is a phenothiazine derivative. Promethazine competitively blocks histamine H1 receptors, has anti-allergic, anti-exudative, local anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, adrenolytic, central and peripheral cholinolytic action. Promethazine reduces swelling of the mucous membranes, capillary permeability, itching.
Promethazine pill is an effective antiemetic, antihistamine, sedative medicine. It is prescribed for the treatment of symptoms of allergic conditions of various etiologies, including rhinitis, conjunctivitis, pruritus, urticaria, edema, hay fever, treatment of anaphylactic reactions.
The drug is recommended when conducting infusion therapy, simultaneously with the use of lytic mixtures. It enhances the effect of anesthetics and analgesics, therefore, it can be taken before surgeries both as a sedative and to enhance anesthesia and/or after surgeries - to enhance analgesics. It is also effective in preventing and treating problems associated with the poor functioning of the vestibular apparatus, or kinetosis (symptoms of marine, automobile, airborne diseases).
Precautions when taking this drug include the following:
The use of promethazine in combination with opioid analgesics and tranquilizers for complex preoperative preparation of patients is possible only under the strict supervision of a physician. With long-term treatment, systematic general blood tests and monitoring of liver function indicators are recommended. During the period of treatment, the patient should not be allowed to consume alcohol.
Use with caution in acute or chronic respiratory diseases, since promethazine suppresses the cough reflex.
In old age, caution is required when using promethazine, as acute urinary retention and extrapyramidal disorders are possible. For the prevention of depression of the central nervous system, caffeine is recommended. When prescribing promethazine to children, it is necessary to make sure that the symptoms of the disease are not adverse reactions of this drug and there are no simultaneous manifestations of undiagnosed Reye syndrome and encephalopathy.
Promethazine side effects are abnormal sleep, tachycardia, hypotension, collapse, convulsions, lethargy, or, on the contrary, agitation of psychomotor activity.
