Zyrtec is anti-allergic medicine. It is a blocker of H1-histamine receptors. Zyrtec medication in addition to inhibiting the early phase of the allergic reaction (secretion of allergy mediators), inhibits the attraction of eosinophils, neutrophils, and basophils to the allergic reaction zone, thus reducing the severity of allergic inflammation. These effects of the drug are not accompanied by central action, as evidenced by psychometric tests and ECG data. This drug compares favorably with first-generation antihistamines, which act briefly (1.5–2 hours), cause addiction after 7–12 days, and are characterized by anticholinergic and anti-serotoninergic effects (drowsiness, fatigue or agitation, poor coordination of movements, concentration, dizziness, increased appetite).
Zyrtec pill is prescribed to eliminate: •nasal (from the nose) and ocular symptoms of persistent (year-round) and intermittent (seasonal) allergic rhinitis, •allergic conjunctivitis (itching in the nose/eyes, sneezing, nasal congestion, tearing, redness of the conjunctiva). It can be used for chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Special instructions. It is preferable to refrain from using Zyrtek during pregnancy. Since cetirizine is excreted in breast milk, if necessary, the patient should stop breastfeeding. In experimental studies, the teratogenic or embryotoxic action of the drug has not been established.
It is possible to use the drug with caution in the case of: •chronic kidney disease; •old age; •epilepsy, increased convulsive readiness; •predisposition to urinary retention; •age up to one year;
Overdose symptoms are confusion, fatigue, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, itching, malaise, dilated pupils, anxiety, drowsiness, weakness, stupor, rapid heartbeat, tremors, urinary retention.
Treatment of an overdose is gastric lavage, taking sorbent (activated carbon), conducting supportive and symptomatic therapy.
